Calculating Fuel Consumption: What to Know
Does The Type of Fuel Matter?
Anytime you hire a new vehicle it is important that you understand the fuel type it uses. Putting petrol in a diesel car and vice versa can seriously damage the internal workings of the car, resulting in a misfire that can damage the fuel systems.
What Factors Impact Fuel Consumption?
While you can calculate fuel consumption estimates for a vehicle, there are many factors that can result in you using less or more fuel on your trip. The following factors will cause increased fuel consumption:
- Driving at high speeds
- Short distance driving
- Frequent and aggressive acceleration
- The weight of the vehicle and its load
- Any exterior additions or open windows that create drag
- Using the air conditioner
How Much Fuel Is Needed to Travel 500km?
Now knowing the factors that impact fuel consumption, how will we calculate how much fuel is needed for a trip? To be safe we will want to overestimate when calculating fuel consumption. One way to do this is to calculate for the least fuel-efficient a vehicle can be. Assuming we are using a 4WD Toyota HiAce or Toyota Coaster, let’s calculate fuel consumption.
The Toyota HiAce and Coaster have very similar fuel consumption averages at a conservative 12 litres per 100km. When using our converted models, it is smart to budget slightly more to account for the extra weight of the conversions. Let’s say 15 litres per 100km. That would give us 75 litres of fuel to travel 500km. With the HiAce having a fuel tank capacity of 70L and the Coaster having 95L. a 500km trip should be doable on one tank thanks to our over estimation. It is always good to ensure there are petrol stations on your route just in case you need them.
How Much Will It Cost?
After you calculate fuel consumption for a trip, you can begin budgeting. The problem is that fuel prices are always fluctuating and vary from region to region. We recommend researching the prices in your local area and the prices at petrol stations along the route of your trip to accurately budget the cost of fuel for your trip.
